Technology Tools Implementation Idea – Evernote

Subject Area: Science

Course: Grade 12 Physics

Topic: Multiple Topics

Task: Formula Sheet

Technology Tool: Evernote

Description

Grade 12 Physics is filled with many equations to learn and understand. While the textbook has information on all of these equations, the information is spread out through the whole textbook, and contains much more information than necessary.

Suggested Use of Technology

Notebooks made in Evernote for different units with each note covering a different equation. These notes will contain information such as the variables used, what these variables represent and the applications of the given equation. These individual notes while separated into notebooks by Physics unit, will also be tagged based on the variables used in the equation and how those variables are measured, allowing students to find equations from multiple units that use the same variables.

Why and how would this improve student learning?

Evernote allows students to have easy access to all the equations they will need for the year. It provides these equations in an organized manner allowing students to explore all the equations they will need for the year, and allows them to learn these equations at their own speed. This also allows students to have easy access to all the equations necessary, since Evernote is accessible via computer and mobile device, as opposed to having to flip through a notebook every time one needs to find a certain equation. This can also help students review, providing a database with all of the relevant variables available for them to learn and understand.

Technology Tools Implementation Idea: Socrative

STUDENT NAME: NATHAN SHARMA

///////////////////////////////

Subject Area: Language

Course: ENG4U1 (Grade 12 English)

Topic: Hamlet by Shakespeare

Task: Act Quizzes

Technology Tool: Socrative

///////////////////////////////

Description:

Mr Carpenter implements mandatory act-based quizzes throughout the reading of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. They are typically in the form of mixed multiple choice-short answer questions with attached quotes or plot summaries. Mr Carpenter often allows the use of several different answers to a single question depending on how the student interprets the passage, meaning that he must mark flexibly on a per-student basis. Students are limited in the amount of time they are able to spend writing the quiz.

///////////////////////////////

Suggested Use of Technology Tool:

I suggest implementing Socrative online quizzing as an alternative to the current format. Students would be given an access code and take the quiz in real time with an appropriate time  limit attached. The quiz would not begin until all students have connected and all quizzes will automatically lock/submit when the time limit is reached. Mr Carpenter would receive feedback on student performance live as answers are submitted and this performance data remains available following conclusion of the quiz for use as a resource in the creation of the remaining act quizzes. Students would receive immediate feedback on the results of the multiple choice section and would be presented with a preliminary grade.

///////////////////////////////

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?:

The use of Socrative as an alternative quiz format will improve the learning experience in several ways. For starters, the new format would allow for the use of more engaging real-time content like scene related images or event timelines with limited effort required on the part of Mr Carpenter. Better student engagement will generally lead to higher quiz averages without any real impact on student knowledge. The online format would also allow for all students to be given an equal amount of time to complete the quiz as the system will automatically open and lock the assignment. Mr Carpenter can choose to automatically mark short answer results by searching for key words or sentences or manually mark student submissions in a quick and organized fashion, reducing the time spent marking outside of class. The same can be said for multiple choice questions in that Socrative effectively performs like a free scantron, automatically marking the correct solutions. Immediate feedback on multiple choice answers will allow students to prepare for any act-related class work to follow without the pressure for Mr Carpenter to complete marking in a timely manner. Socrative’s performance data will also provide Mr Carpenter with valuable information on class trends like which questions students consistently failed or answered correctly. He can use this knowledge as a point of reference when creating future quizzes or to address weak points on plot events in the next class.

Technology Tools Implementation Idea – MOOVLY

Subject Area: English

Course: Grade 12 English
Topic: Media Studies
Task: Create a short PSA for a cause that you believe in
Technology Tool: Moovly

Description:

Students often struggle with making videos because of the complex editing programs. The editing programs that are available for free lack too many function. On the other hand, editing programs with extensive features and allow for more professional-looking products are usually very expensive or too difficult to use.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool: MOOVLY

Moovly allows the user to create simple, polished animated videos. It has many pre-programmed functions and a wide array of animations that can be added to virtually any image. It is user-friendly and easy to use. Additionally, Moovly combines all your movie editing needs into one program – there is no need for any additional plug-ins or programs. Best of all – it’s FREE.

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?

This technology tool is beneficial to our learning because it provides students a new way to present their learning and effectively express their thoughts and ideas. It helps with the consolidation process because it forces students to condense their ideas into a simple, concise 2-3 minute video. Instead of focusing your time and energy on learning how to use complicated programs like iMovie and Adobe Premiere Pro, the student’s focus can be redirected into creating a Moovly masterpiece.

Also, this program will improve the students concentration and focus on their work. Students will be less likely to be distracted and quit in frustrations because Moovly provides a productive environment. Distractions are minimized because the user does not need any other devices or programs. The frustration that students often feel is also reduced because of the program easy-to-use nature.

Technology Tools Implementation Idea – Pixlr

Subject Area: English

Course: ENG4U1

Topic: Multiple Topics (Depression, Syria Refugee Crisis, etc.)

Task: Create a Video, Podcast, Website, 4 Print ads for your chosen topic

Technology Tool: Pixlr

Description

Students in groups of 4 are to create a video, a podcast, a website and 4 Print Ads based on the topic they chose to present for the class. The posters must all be related in terms of text, colour scheme, and must contain some sort of logo that is present in all of them.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool

Students can utilize the Pixlr applications to create posters that are comparable to posters being created using Photoshop. Both the Pixlr Editor and Pixlr Express applications provide students with many tools and possible combinations to create digital media pieces. The Pixlr Editor is more hands on where the student is to use his/her own photo manipulating skills to create their poster while the Pixlr Express provides the student with a variety of built-in effects which can be used to represent the similarities and connection between the posters. The students can first use the Editor and transition to using the Express to add the finishing touches to their posters.

Why and how would the technology tool improve learning?

Using Pixlr for an assignment such as this encourages creativity and reinforces what they learned about their topic through the use of visuals and text. Having the Pixlr Express tool also simplifies the process of creating and accomplishing all the objectives required for the project while the Editor tool provides the students with the freedom and creativity one would have in using a program like Photoshop. With the many possibilities available to them, students tend to reflect on their topic more deeply to decide on how they can create the right print ads. Since the topics given to us are open and not exactly something one would learn about in an English class, retrieval and generation practice is enforced unto the students as they create their print ads.

Technology Tool Implementation Idea – Desmos

Subject Area: Math

Course: Calculus & Vectors (12)

Topic: Calculus (Derivatives)

Task:  Reviewing, learning how to graph, checking work.

Technology Tool: Desmos Graphing Calculator

Description

Graphing functions and seeing graph behaviors in specific intervals are extremely important in Calculus. Graphing can be used in questions that simply ask for a sketch of a graph or in problems which require students to find intercepts or asymptotes, and etc. However, learning to graph is typically more challenging than performing algebra because of the many steps students must take before they can actually draw a graph.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool

Desmos can be used to check over work and ensure that students understand the origin of particular graph characteristics. Desmos also has features that allow students to enter multiple functions and toggle on and off of them to compare characteristics or find intercepts. Furthermore, the user can find the tangent to a curve, which allows them to visualize derivatives. After a while, derivatives become abstract concepts to math students if they do not make the effort to understand its applications. With Desmos, derivatives can represent a more tangible version of a math problem.

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?

Many students often have a hard time understanding complex mathematical theories, because they do not know what certain solutions to math questions mean. Although they may be able to perfectly solve an equation, they are not able to explain the significance of the values they found. Desmos helps students employ the learning strategy of elaboration, since it causes them to ask why their answers are correct or incorrect. Additionally, students must use previous knowledge of more basic math ideas in order to interpret graphs, which helps reinforce previous lessons they have learned as well.

Technology Tools Implementation Idea – Desmos & Symbolab

Subject Area: Mathematics

Course: Grade 12 Calculus

Topic: Multiple Topics

Task: Review for evaluations

Technology Tool: Desmos & Symbolab

Description

Everyday students are assigned with homework, which could from the calculus textbook or a given assignment, based on the chapter learned in class (i.e optimization). This is done order to help solidify their understanding of what was learned in preparation for an evaluation whether it be a test, quiz or exam.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool

During or after the completion of assigned homework would be the most ideal time to use both these tools. Students would be able to check full solutions that are normally not available through textbook answer pages and even more so with hand-out assignments.  By providing both a graphing calculator as well as a step-by-step solution solver, students are able to fully check their answers.

Why and how would the technology improve student learning?

Through the use of these tools, it would provide students with a greater understanding of calculus’s key ideas and concepts.  By allowing students to view full answers through step-by-step solutions, they can grasp an understanding of where they went wrong if their answer happened to be incorrect or as a way to see how a problem is completed if they cannot solve it. An example of this could be graphing the equation of (x^3)/(x^2 – 6).  If a student does not understand how this would be done they could put the equation into desmos to view what it would look like, which could then provide them with an idea of how to graph it without the calculator.

With the convenience of both an in-browser graphing calculator and equation solver, even without assistance of a teacher a student would be able to complete the homework while still understanding the subject at hand, saving time without having to be stuck on a question.

Technology Tool Implementation Idea – Slack

Subject Area:  English

Course:  English 3U

Topic: Macbeth

Task:  Video/Media Assignment

Technology Tool: Slack

Description

Students in groups of 4 were tasked to create a trailer (video) of an adaptation of Macbeth. The trailer was to be a couple minutes long and cover key aspects of the play.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool

My group had lots of problems with communication. We mainly used Facebook Messenger to discuss our project, but important information would often get pushed up by side conversations and Facebook itself was very distracting. Also, we wrote our script and printed materials on a Google Doc and would occasionally use the messaging service provided by Google Drive. Rarely, we would also use Skype for voice calls and talk about things that were harder to discuss with only text. In the end, it was very disorganized with lots of tabs and applications open, and bits of information spread across different media. There were times where we had to scroll through days of messaging to find important information in the chat log.

Slack would have definitely helped us out for this project. Not only does it provide a distraction-free messaging service, where we could have important conversations, it provides support for apps like Skype and Google Drive, which we used. It allows the users to separate the random conversations from on-task conversations with Slack’s chat rooms. It reduces communication clutter by bringing different media that a group may use into one software/application. Also, Slack helps the user in referring to important snippets of text by using their ‘star feature’.

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?

Slack would help consolidate information by modifying the environment. Removing distractions (i.e. Facebook news feed, off track conversations) would improve concentration on the task at hand. Also, by combining different mediums of communication and work, it reduces distractions that may occur when switching from Skype to Google Docs for example.

Being able to easily refer to important information that is starred aids retrieval practice. At first, you may not remember what the important message was, but having the answer readily available will help you to consolidate that fact after a couple runs of retrieval practice.

Overall, Slack provides a quality-of-life improvement and a boost to student learning that would have been useful in our group project.

Technology Tool Implementation Idea – Piktochart

Subject Area:  Media & Communication

Course:  Grade 12 English

Topic: 1984

Task:  Creating posters/propaganda advertisements for The Brotherhood

Technology Tool:  Pikotochart

Description

Students must create four posters that have a central theme and express a slogan that embodies the values of the Brotherhood. The posters should also be relevant to the themes emphasized in 1984.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool

Students can use Piktochart to create posters that include a variety of graphics and text. In this way, students can incorporate visual elements that are relevant to the Brotherhood as well as 1984 itself, while also including a slogan using the text capabilities. In addition, Piktochart allows easy creation of info graphics which can be utilized to create propaganda. Finally, the preset templates allow students to stay within a consistent theme for all four print ads.

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?

Not only does Piktochart simplify the poster-making process, it also forces students to consider more deeply which visual aids would be the most effective and relevant to the goal of the assignment. Piktochart allows students with no graphics skills to easily create and modify a poster or info graphic which is perfect for this assignment. In addition, creating a media product such as a poster requires students to consider which topics are the most important to include and make connections from the book in order to create the most effective poster ad. As a result, students must reflect more thoughtfully on the themes of the book and pick out the ones that will be the most powerful to use as the basis of their poster or info graphic. While creating their print ad, students also use retrieval to recall important examples from the book, as well as mnemonics which are common in visually oriented tasks.

Technology Tools Implementation Idea: Evernote

Subject Area: Sciences

Course: Biology

Topic: Any topic (e.g macromolecules, nucleic acids, etc.)

Task: Studying and reviewing concepts

Technology Tool: Evernote

Description

Students are provided with the power-point lessons for studying and the method of studying is up to the student. However, if the wrong method of studying is used, students may not be able to actually understand and retain the concepts and thus the learning cannot be transformed into deeper learning.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool

Use the Evernote tool to create your own biology notes that can be accessed anywhere with any device with the app. Since they are digital notes, the student would save a lot of time compared  to hand written notes and they can easily copy and paste important images rather than drawing it out themselves or having to print it separately. They can also easily add in new information that they learn in class and are not covered in the powerpoints and with the reminders tool they can easily take note of important questions that they stumble upon during their own time to ask in class. Furthermore, by having all of the biology notes compiled in an online notebook the student can easily find specific details by using the tag feature.

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?

By generating their own notes they are taking the time to process the information and make connections to the content. Since their notes would all be easily accessible, it also allows the student to study anywhere, anytime which will make learning strategies such as spaced practice easier because their study schedule would not have to work around their location or materials they have on hand.

Technology Tools Implementation Idea – Evernote

Subject Area: Computer Science

Course: Grade 12 Computer Science

Topic: Multiple Topics (Databases, Sorting, ArrayLists, etc.)

Task: Create an exam study sheet as an overview for the exam. This sheet will include a little blurb on all the parts of the exam, providing a good review for the exam.

Technology Tool: Evernote

Description: This exam study sheet encompasses a lot of the topics covered throughout the semester. There are many topics to be covered and concepts to be reviewed, and this sheet will allow for students to easily cover all topics. Evernote would be especially useful here because students would be able to split the topics among each other, and then share a notebook in which all the exam study sheets can be consolidated. Without this program, making an exam sheet with detail would be time-consuming and a large hassle.

Suggested Use of Technology Tool: With a program like Evernote, students can create study notes together very easily, as Evernote has great collaboration functions. In this case, I would expect students to create a shared notebook, and all collaborate by creating notes for their individual parts. This not only saves time, it also allows for a deeper overview of each topic.

Another use of this technology, is the fact that Evernote allows for tags and easy searching. This means that while a student is studying for exams, he/she can easily retrieve certain topics and will allow for really easy studying. This is especially important in computer science because computer science is taught by the collection of several concepts, and so easy back-and-forth is imperative.

Why and how would the technology tool improve student learning?:

This technology aids students with interleaving. Evernote allows for students to retrieve their notes very easily, and so being able to go back on tags and searches makes switching from topic to topic very easy. Also, the organization of notes in notebooks, again, allows for students to easily switch from topic to topic with minimal time lost in between.
